Maritime and aeronautical markets, needing connectivity to range where terrestrial networks do not exist, bring significant demand for satellite services and terminal equipment. Whilst satellite’s prospects in these markets were negatively impacted by the pandemic, more recent indications are that the fundamentals of the satcom mobility markets are sound, with recovery underway. Next generation satellites – both in geostationary and non-geostationary orbit – and related terminals, are providing greater throughput and flexibility while promising to improve the economics for the airlines and maritime companies.
For ships, satellite-enabled communications provide crew welfare; enables digitalisation, enhancing use of information and operational technology and powering IoT; serves decarbonisation programs; ensures vessel safety; and brings streaming, browsing, and gaming to passengers, something that is critical to the relationship that cruise lines now have with their digitally dependent customers across all demographics. For aircraft, satellite-enabled communications can provide high-quality inflight connectivity to the passengers and cockpit along with providing real-time analysis of data from various onboard systems.
